Joon Nak Choi (often known as JC) is a distinguished academic, data scientist, and corporate strategist operating at the intersection of artificial intelligence, organizational theory, and economic sociology. He currently serves as an Adjunct Associate Professor of Management at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) Business School. Highly regarded for his ability to translate complex data analytics into actionable business architecture, Choi has spent over a decade shaping tech-driven business education and corporate advisory frameworks across the Asia-Pacific region.

Choi established a rigorous interdisciplinary foundation during his early academic career in the United States. He first graduated from Brown University with an A.B. in Economics, International Relations, and Urban Studies. He subsequently moved to Stanford University, where he earned both his M.A. and Ph.D. in Sociology, specializing in how social capital, diaspora communities, and corporate networks influence broader economic development. Following his doctorate, he completed a postdoctoral fellowship at Stanford’s Shorenstein Asia-Pacific Research Center before relocating permanently to Hong Kong in 2011 to join the HKUST faculty.

As an educator and researcher, Choi’s influence spans multiple prominent academic institutions. In addition to his primary tenure at HKUST—where he also serves as the Advisor to the MSc program in Business Analytics—he has held visiting professorships at Stanford University and NYU Shanghai. His academic research focuses on corporate strategy, machine learning, and organizational behavioral patterns under AI integration. He is also the author of Global Talent: Skilled Labor as Social Capital in Korea, a book that critiques systemic macroeconomic vulnerabilities and examines transnational corporate bridges.

Beyond university lecture halls, Choi is an active entrepreneur who has successfully commercialized data science solutions to address structural market gaps. He co-founded Zectr, a predictive data analytics platform, and serves as the founder and CEO of Learnovate Technologies Limited, an innovative HKUST spinoff company. Learnovate specializes in proprietary, AI-enabled assessment and essay feedback tools designed to optimize grading accuracy and relieve administrative workflows for educational institutions navigating modern generative AI transitions.

Today, Choi functions as an authoritative global voice on AI adoption and technological change management. He serves as the APAC Regional Director for the Harvard AI for Human Flourishing initiative and stands as an expert delegate in AI to the Digital Education Council. His insights are regularly highlighted by major global platforms including the MIT Technology Review, the South China Morning Post, and the United Nations. Whether advising C-suite executives on strategic AI deployment or designing university coursework, Choi remains at the absolute forefront of helping modern organizations balance technological automation with human capability.
